I just find it hard to believe. Paying for incoming calls and SMS. That's just crazy!

You pay for outgoing calls-even local ones--in most places outside of the US. The carriers can't easily charge callers for incoming calls, so they ream mobile customers both ways. You have huge bucks of minutes and crap like "night/weekend minutes" and "mobile to mobile" to compensate. Horses for courses.

Paying for incoming SMS is just insane. I can see why they chose to do it the way they did for voice calls. Makes no sense for SMS because you can't refuse an SMS like you can a phone call.

Heck, I'll take free M2M any day of the week. I blow through close to 4k minutes/month, but I'm only on the 450 Anytime minute package thanks to M2M.

Yeah there are good and bad things with US plans but just like Ricky, I'd rather have unlimited M2M and unlimited data for $20 than free incoming SMS. After all, unlimited SMS is only an extra $5-$10...
